Aarthi's hard work has been paid and she was the topper of the class. She couldn't be more happier than this. Her HOD appreciated her and advised her to aspire for University ranking. It was a proud moment for her to cherish. Her parents and friends were all happy about her score.
After the result buzz settled, it was time to relax with some music and drama. The college was getting cheerful for the 'Cultural Day'. Every department was busy with the selection of performers of various arts, dance and dramatics. The coordinators were busy with planning, organising and rehearsing. Rakesh was the cultural co-ordinator for the first years, for his department.
"Friends, those who are interested in dance, acting, singing and poem writing, please register your names with me", announced Rakesh. Few from the class, got their names registered. He went through the list and noticed that Aarthi did not come forward for singing.
"Anybody interested in singing?", he said and waited patiently. Aarthi was looking away.
"Anybody for singing please?!", he announced again and expected Aarthi to show some interest. But Aarthi stayed least bothered.
He wasn't feeling good about it. Deep in his heart, he agreed that Aarthi was a good singer, but his little overwhelming ego, did not let him talk to her about participating in the culturals.
A tiny ball of guiltiness blocked his throat, but still he carried on with his work.
"What?! You are not participating? Have you gone mad?", shouted Aarthi's school friend, over the telephone, that evening.
"I don't want to look silly, besides there are lot many talented people, who are professionally trained. I don't have the guts", said Aarthi in a gentle tone.
"I am not ready to believe this. You don't want to do this just because Rakesh is coordinating. In what way is he influencing you? I really don't get it. Don't keep pondering over the past", she shouted at Aarthi again.
"No, I am definitely not doing this. Never again", said Aarthi firmly.
Aarthi's school buddies weren't happy about it. But they did not wanted to force her either. They wished that Aarthi could get over and move on.
The most awaited fun filled day of cultural events finally arrived. The arrangements were so grand and a definite treat for eyes and ears. The jaw dropping performances amazed the audience and the applause echoed. Aarthi regretted that she should have participated in this spectacular event.
After all the fun, the semester came to an end and this time, students had a month long summer holidays. Soon after the exams, Aarthi went to her native and thoroughly enjoyed the times with her friends and family. During her stay, she was overwhelmingly proud, as everyone appreciated her for her good score at school as well as in college. She even motivated the younger ones in the family, to aspire for Engineering studies.
