Intimacy - Part 19

As the days moved on, the best friends, began to slowly drift apart. Aarthi got enthusiastic about her project and was sincere with her work. In fact, her Manager, noted her as an ‘asset’ to the organisation. She worked tirelessly and earned credits, for her merits.

Rakesh, at the other end of the world, was busy with his studies and part time job. He was busy, round the clock and worked harder. He slowly came out of the depressing sickness of, missing home. He got accustomed to the new city and made quite a lot of friends, as always.

Down few months, they hardly chatted with each other and all they exchanged were some forwarded emails. Once in a blue moon, they would chat about work, studies and the city. But, even that wouldn't last longer.

Rakesh successfully completed his Masters and got an offer, from a reputed organisation, in a different city. He missed his previous place and the University, but life has to move on. He was excited about his job and his parents were happy for him.

Aarthi got promoted, at work and was leading a small team. She loved the everyday challenges and slowly sharpened her management skills. She was even happy to work longer hours and weekends too. She was greatly appreciated and recognised. As an icing on the cake, she would be travelling to US, to support the project, from the client end, for an year or may be two.

Aarthi was thrilled and eager about her trip. But, her mom did not like the idea, of Aarthi going abroad. Aarthi was all determined and even her mom’s persistent persuasion, did not do any magic.
“Are you serious about going to US, Aarthi?”, asked Aarthi’s mom, in rage, as Aarthi was working on her laptop.
“Mom why do you keep asking this, a million times? I am all set and leaving tomorrow night. Will you still ask me this question at the airport, too?”
“Everything might look plain and simple to you. But, not for us. It is not a joke, for a girl to go to a distant land and stay there for months”
“Mom, you sound as if I am going to a naive island. Mom I am going to THE United States of America”
“That doesn't excite me”
“Mom please. I agreed when you told ‘no’ to higher studies. So, now it's your turn to agree with my decision”
“But, your decision is ridiculous”
“Mom, are you going to be upset until I leave and make me cry until I see you next?”, asked Aarthi, in a humble tone.
“Do you think I will live in peace until I see you?”
“Mom, please”
“OK. I won't talk about it anymore”, said her mom and went into the kitchen.

During her flight, Aarthi was worried about her mom. She was looking forward for this trip, which is a fruit for all her hard work. But, she was sorry for her mom too. She believed that, time will make her mom, feel better and soon she will be back to her lively spirit. As her mind was lingering about her family and friends, she was reminded of Rakesh. She realised that she haven't spoken to him in the recent times and the last time she spoke, she remembered Rakesh mentioning about his job and the new place. She advised herself to email him, soon after she landed.
